School bullying is one of the most difficult experiences a child may have. Many people think that bullying involves physical acts only; however, it may take a more complex form and may result in serious emotional troubles. Following are several types of school bullying that may occur in any school and with any student.
Verbal bullying involves using words or statements that may hurt or demean some other person. Usually, kids with special needs become the target for bullies. Name-calling, making offensive jokes about the race, ethnicity, behavior, color, socio-economic status may leave deep emotional impact on a child or a teenager. Making threats is also a form of verbal bullying that may leave scars in a child’s soul, even if the act of the threat is not performed.
Physical bullying is another type of school bullying that involves physical actions to get power over the target. Some examples of physical bullying may be:
- Destroying the property of another student
Physical bullying is usually conducted against smaller, petite students who cannot protect themselves from the bully who is usually a stronger one. Physical bullying may also take the form of band bullying i.e. a larger group of stronger students may try to abuse a student who does not have many friends or is not strong enough to defend himself/herself.
Teens use technology everywhere, as they are provided with cellular phones, laptops, digital cameras and other equipment. Hence, technology is a part of their lives and it has become rather easy to hurt people using it. Besides, technology makes it possible to be anonymous and, accordingly, remain unpunished. Some examples of cyberbullying may involve:
- Texting offensive content
- Altering some other person’s webpage content or hacking accounts
- Making online threats
- Sending hurtful messages
Students who do cyberbullying usually do not have the courage to say those things in real life that is the reason why cyberbullying is rather a common thing these days.
Sexual bullying is another type of school bullying. The actions carried out by the bully, usually target on a person sexually. Some examples of sexual bullying may be sexual name-calling, telling vulgar jokes, making rude gestures, touching a person without their desire and so on.
Mostly girls are the targets of this type of bullying. Sexual bullying is a serious problem to consider as it may bring to sexual assaults.
Relational aggression is a type of school bullying that is often practiced by girls in order to hurt other girls’ reputations. This type of bullying may involve conducting social manipulation against the target, spreading rumors, impacting others’ impression about a person and so on. Usually, bullies do this to increase their own social standing and improve their own reputation among their peers.
